The layers beneath a flat roof membrane
The white or dark sheet visible from above is only the weather surface. Below it may be a structural deck, vapor-control layer, insulation in one or more layers, tapered insulation that creates slope, and a cover board that gives the membrane a firm, durable base. Attachment can be mechanical, adhered, or part of another approved assembly.
Each layer has a job. Insulation affects energy use and temperature at the deck. A cover board can improve impact and traffic resistance. Tapered insulation can direct water toward drains or scuppers when the structure itself does not provide enough slope. The design needs to treat these components as one roof, not separate products.
Roof deck
Material, condition, moisture, and attachment capacity influence the approved system.
Insulation
Thermal goals and drainage design determine type, thickness, and layout.
Cover board
A compatible board can add a stable surface and protect insulation from traffic and impact.
Membrane
TPO or another appropriate system forms the sealed weather layer across the roof.
